I love getting questions from readers (hint, hint!), so I was happy that Hadyn emailed last month with an outfit question. You may recognize Hadyn as a frequent guest blogger here on merelymothers (read her last post here). She is the mother of a two-year-old and works at the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Hadyn asked for some ideas to change up the following outfit, comprised of three great basics: a cardigan, riding boots, and tan corduroy pants. I love the bright orange color of the cardigan and pairing it with more neutral pieces, as she did. But sometimes we can get sick of pairing the same sweater with pants and shoes, am I right?
Time to switch it up!
1) Try a skirt or a different color pant, and try wearing the cardigan open with a shirt underneath:
2. Try layering a fun, printed shirt underneath the cardigan, wearing it open or closed. I love both the polka dot and leopard print Hadyn chose:
3. Try a scarf or necklace:
4. Try a belt:
5. Try combining things from each step. I love that navy top with the orange!
Hadyn ended up with TEN new outfits from her own closet!

great post! I have 2 orange sweaters. I usually just wear it with pants and to work, nothing special. I usually avoid black with the orange, because I don’t want to look too “halloween” haha. but your outfits have inspired me. Love the sweater with jeans!

I had (have?) an orange sweater that I used to wear with a dark purple skirt. I suspect it wasn’t fashionable at the time I did it (10 years ago?). Good to see that it is now and that really I was just very fashion forward! Haha.

Hey everyone, thanks for commenting! I had so much fun trying out all of Amy’s ideas. Since talking with her, I wear the polka-dot shirt and big necklace combo, as well as the leopard print shirt outfit all. the. time. I get tons of compliments on both. Thanks so much Amy for your help. I would’ve never come up with those combinations on my own, and I never thought I had the confidence to pull them off. I feel like a haute mama now!
